Tooth extractions are a common dental procedure, but one complication can turn recovery into a real pain (literally). Dry socket is a wildly uncomfortable condition that can derail your recovery. Thankfully, while it sounds scary, it’s also easy to avoid with the right care. Keep reading to learn how to protect your mouth and keep your healing on track after a tooth extraction.

What Is Dry Socket?

After a tooth is removed, a blood clot forms in the socket to protect the bone and nerves underneath. If the clot is lost too early, either because it’s dislodged or dissolves, the area becomes exposed. Once the socket is open, that’s when the pain starts. Dry socket can delay healing and often requires a return visit to your dentist to set it right.

How Can You Prevent Dry Socket?

Dry socket isn’t a guaranteed outcome of tooth extraction. In fact, it’s pretty uncommon. Still, if you want to lower your odds of it happening to you, just follow these tips:

1. Skip the Straw

Sucking motions are one of the top causes of dry socket. When you drink any liquids, try to sip straight from a cup for at least three to five days after your extraction.

2. Don’t Smoke or Vape

Smoking and vaping interfere with healing and create suction in the mouth, which can loosen the clot. If you need help quitting, talk to your dentist. This is a great time to start the process of kicking the habit for good!

3. Eat Smart

Plan your post-extraction menu to exclusively include soft foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, applesauce, and warm soup. Avoid crunchy, spicy, or hot foods that might irritate the area or dislodge the clot.

4. Take It Easy

Rest is essential after an extraction. Avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting for at least 24 to 48 hours after your procedure. Increased blood pressure can disrupt clot formation and slow your healing.

5. Follow Your Dentist’s Instructions

Every mouth is different. Your dentist’s post-op care instructions are designed to fit your unique needs, so be sure to follow them closely. If you’re ever unsure about what to do, don’t hesitate to call them.

Watch for Warning Signs

If you suddenly notice intense pain, a bad smell, or a gross taste coming from the extraction site a few days after your procedure, it could be dry socket. Call your dentist right away. They can clean the area and provide a medicated gel to help you feel better fast.

Dry socket is no joke, but a little extra care goes a long way in keeping your healing smooth and pain-free. Take it easy, follow the dos and don’ts, and when in doubt, ask your dentist. Soon, you’ll be all healed up and ready to take on the world again!
