If you’re anxious about receiving dental care of any kind, your dentist may recommend nitrous oxide sedation to calm your nerves. However, if you’ve never been given nitrous oxide during a dental appointment before, you might have some misgivings. Is it truly safe? To help you make a decision that you’re comfortable with, here’s a closer look at this common sedation option and the risks associated with it.

What is Nitrous Oxide Sedation?

When you undergo nitrous oxide sedation at the dentist’s office, your dentist will place a small mask over your nose. The mask will be connected to a special machine that, when turned on, releases nitrous oxide gas mixed with oxygen. When you breathe in the nitrous oxide, it will put you in a highly relaxed state. You’ll still be conscious and able to answer your dentist’s questions, but you will be unbothered by the sights and sounds of the dental office.

Does Nitrous Oxide Sedation Come with Any Risks?

It should be noted that, as long as it’s being administered by a qualified dentist, nitrous oxide sedation is considered very safe and carries few risks. That said, if too much of the gas is inhaled, it may result in dizziness, excessive sweating, nausea, fatigue, and other side effects. Fortunately, these are typically short-term issues that tend to wear off quickly.

It’s worth bearing in mind that nitrous oxide is not recommended for everyone. In particular, it’s not a good fit for individuals who are in their first trimester of pregnancy or have certain medical issues such as chronic pulmonary disease. Your dentist will need to review your entire health history before deciding whether nitrous oxide sedation is right for you.

What are the Benefits of Nitrous Oxide Sedation?

While it’s certainly important to be aware of the potential risks of nitrous oxide sedation, you shouldn’t ignore the benefits it has to offer. Nitrous oxide is a great option for alleviating mild feelings of dental anxiety, and it can go a long way toward helping you have a more positive experience at the dentist’s office. Furthermore, its effects wear off quickly, so you’ll be able to return to your regular routine right away once your appointment is complete.

In short, while nitrous oxide sedation can cause some mild side effects, it’s still a safe way to stay relaxed in the dental chair. Don’t be afraid to ask your dentist whether nitrous oxide sedation could be a good choice for you during your next appointment.
