A Tale of Two Treatments: Getting a Crown Vs. Getting a Filling
June 3, 2025

As you’ve seen from the title, this is a tale of two treatments: dental crowns and dental fillings. These restorations have completely different purposes in the world of dentistry, but they’re also very similar, making it difficult to know when you need one vs. the other.
Never fear, dear reader. By the time you finish scrolling, you’ll be able to tell crowns and fillings apart with ease. And if you do find yourself in a situation where the lines are more blurred, well, that’s what your dentist is for!
You Might Need a Dental Crown If…
Your tooth has severe damage or is close to shattering. A dental crown is meant to provide near 360-degree support and protection. It will look something like a hat for your tooth, complete with a pit that will fit perfectly over it.
Aesthetically speaking, this means your compromised tooth will no longer be visible. Instead, it will be completely hidden underneath the crown. Practically speaking, a crown creates comprehensive protection that shields your vulnerable tooth from bacteria and further harm.
You Might Need a Dental Filling When…
You or your dentist has detected a cavity. Fillings are designed to “fill in” the mild to moderate holes left behind by tooth decay. While unsealed, cavities are the perfect hiding spot for harmful oral bacteria. Plus, the void compromises the structural integrity of your tooth, making it more likely to break if it suffers damage.
To create a filling, your dentist will carefully mold tooth-colored materials directly into the pit formed by your cavity. Like a crown, this will help protect your weakened tooth. Unlike a crown, the vast majority of your natural tooth will still be visible. Though not 100% accurate, you could say a crown goes over top of your tooth, while a filling goes “inside” of your tooth.
When in Doubt, Trust Your Dentist!
Since it can be extremely difficult for the average joe to tell how badly their tooth is damaged, there’s no shame in asking your dentist which restoration you need. It’s kind of their job to diagnose your dental problems and make treatment recommendations, after all. When in doubt, trust that if your dentist says you need a crown, then you need a crown – and if they say you need a filling, then you need a filling!
